Dark Souls Diaries

After having recently gone through Rogue Legacy, a game that I have seen being compared to Dark Souls more than once, and finding it quite lacking in the difficulty department, I figured the next step would be to tackle the real deal. I know I’m late to the party, what with Dark Souls 2 around the corner, but it looks like I’ll have plenty of offline time in the near future, and I may as well play a singleplayer game.

There’s not much more to it than that, although I do have a couple of conditions:

  • I am going to play the game completely blind for as long as possible. I know nothing about Dark Souls except that it’s a 3rd person action RPG of legendary difficulty. I have never played the game, I have never watched someone else play it, I haven’t even read a real review of it. It simply didn’t interest me before. That means I won’t be checking any guides or online forums, or even looking at a manual. If it happens that I start to miss important end-game or optional content then I may look that up, but for strategies or help, I am on my own.
  • I will play almost exclusively offline. I know there are some sorts of multiplayer actions in Dark Souls, but I was looking for a game that I could play when my connection is too spotty for DotA or anything else, or not available at all.

And that’s about it.

      1. Please ignore my previous question, saw the answer to that in the day 21 post comments. should have read it before asking here, apologies for that.

  1. So, I realize that I was really late with that last update. I’ve just been increasingly busy, and writing takes a lot of time for me, and is also often exhausting. Even if the pace slows (and I don’t want it to slow that much again), never doubt that I’m going all the way.

  2. I had a question about your process while you were playing and how you went about taking screens. I’ve got a site that I’m getting ready to start writing on and I’ve got similar plans to do basically Let’s Plays in written form, similar to your methods of the Dark Souls Diary. I noticed on a comment on reddit you said you recorded your playthrough, so did you record all of your playing and take screens from the video or did you take screens while you were playing.

I’m trying to work out how I want to go about it and getting a second perspective would be pretty helpful. Thanks.

    1. I only recorded a little bit, the stuff in Kiln. For the most part, it was straight screenshots (the quality is easier to control that way).

Dark Souls is ideal for that, as it’s quite slow and there are plenty of breaks in the action. I would go to a place, take a screenshot (just print screen), tab out and write my notes, then save the screenshot (always include the order of the screenshots in the notes so it doesn’t become confusing later). Every day was a new folder that had all of the screenshots and notes together. After I’d reached a good place to stop, I could go back and write from the notes and the screenshots. This was what I did for most of the game. When I first started I wrote it all at once, without notes. But I found it was getting in the way of my progress (having to tab out every 3 minutes to write for 5 minutes), so I switched to taking notes so I could get through the game a bit faster.

The method was fine enough, but had a couple of downsides. The biggest was that I could only take 1 screenshot at a time. I had to paste and save the new screenshot every time before I could take the new one. There are plenty of times where I’d have wanted more than 1 screenshot of a long fight, but since I couldn’t pause the game I had no way to do that. A few times I cheated, sort of, by going back after and getting another screenshot (sometimes that meant deliberately dying). If I did it again, I would get some screen capture software that let me take multiple screenshots that I could sort through later.

  3. I’m upto day eight and i’m loving it! I keep screaming “noooo don’t go that way yet!!” Haha thank you.
